Journal Entry
February 1st:
"Leaving the semi-arid landscape of Maji Moto and reaching the warm-humid lands of Kisumu was a drastic change. Trees become more numerous, greener, and taller. The soil becomes less dry and more fertile. At higher elevation, closer to Kisumu, the landscape is dominated by line patterns through the eucalyptus and tea plantations. With a glimpse through the bus windows, I notice that almost every square meter of land has been disturbed and modified by human activities; farms divide the top of mountains, eucalyptus forests fill the horizon, shining fences and houses are sprinkled throughout the hills, and valleys. The houses are no longer made out of soil and cow dung but wood and red bricks. In Kisumu the air is humid and before dusk, the fishy smell of the lake invades the compound we stay at. The end of session 1 is coming. We spend our days preparing for exams and presentations.
